Travel tips for this route

  1. At over 700 km the drive takes about 10–12 hours. To catch a ferry the same day, leave Bangkok before dawn, or split the trip over two days with a night in Chumphon or Surat Thani (driver accommodation ฿500 per night).
  2. Don Sak has several piers run by different ferry companies, some distance apart. Send your operator or a photo of your ticket when booking and the driver goes to the right one.
  3. Ferry tickets are bought separately from the ferry company. Check the last sailing before you travel; in rough weather some sailings may be delayed or cancelled.
  4. The Gulf coast has its wettest months from about October to December, so check the forecast and allow extra time if travelling then.
  5. Tell us about large suitcases, dive gear or child seats when booking so we can recommend the Commuter or the Alphard.
  6. The return from Don Sak to Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang takes a full day on the road, so book a flight for the next day or leave a very generous margin before check-in.
